Institution Bio
The Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) is Malta’s main educational institution specialising in tourism, hospitality and related service industries. Established in 1987, ITS offers programmes ranging from Foundation level to master’s degree level and combines academic learning with hands-on training, small-group teaching and strong links with industry. Its approach is designed to equip learners with practical and professional competences that support employability and continued development in the sector.
ITS has progressively expanded its education and training capacity through modern campuses, specialised laboratories, professional kitchens and industry-oriented learning environments. Its facilities support practical training in food preparation, beverage service and hospitality operations, while international agreements and exchange opportunities provide students and staff with wider learning and mobility pathways. The Institute also operates a Training School focused on upskilling the workforce and responding to changing skills needs in hospitality and related sectors.
The Institute has developed experience in vocational education, curriculum innovation, sustainability, digital learning and international cooperation. Its recent initiatives include programmes and projects addressing low-carbon development, green skills, food waste reduction, circular economy practices, ethical use of artificial intelligence and the recognition of professional skills. ITS also collaborates with international universities, VET organisations and industry partners to strengthen applied learning, research and professional development.
Within RestaCOVE, ITS contributes its expertise in vocational and higher education, practical catering and culinary training, workforce upskilling and industry cooperation. Its experience helps strengthen the link between learning and real workplace needs, supporting the development of professional, green and digital competences relevant to sustainable collective catering and food-service systems.
